The Background
'‘I saw Jo Crease, CEO of TogetherCo, a charity tackling lonliness in Brighton, speak at a SheSays Brighton digital event. Jo was talking about their recent rebranding, from Impetus to TogetherCo, and how successful it had been but said that they could really use some help with their SEO, as the internet had not been so quick to embrace the new name. Before leaving the event, I touched base with Jo and said that Build14me would be happy to help Together Co with improving their online visibility and SEO.’
- Jo Weatherall Build14me
Together Co’s new site was designed by Becky Alford. You can see Becky’s feature about the process she went through with Together Co, to create the new name and design here: www.beckyalford.co.uk/case-studies/together-co/.
What We Identified
Build14me took a look at the new site, which is a wordpress site. The team were able to identify a number of issues that were slowing down Google’s acceptance of the new name. Once fixed, these would increase Together Co’s visibility for the immediate and long term. Build14me’s initial findings were only scraping the surface, but provided a good indicator that there were issues that could be remedied fairly simply. These included:
Title tags that had not been optimised
Meta descriptions needed to encourage users to visit the Together Co website
Headings and content on the home page did not mention ‘Together Co’, meaning that search engines were struggling to associate the content of the page with the new name
Individual page optimisation: issues were arising because some of the pages were competing with each other for key terms
Some of the Yoast SEO plugin settings needed to be changed, specifically around page indexing
Redirecting of the previous domain to the new one had not been properly implemented
We also identified that a number of online directories and listings were still under ‘Impetus’ as was the Google My Business listing.
Following an initial meeting with Lisa Ball at Together Co, we quickly established our objectives and understood that Lisa would be able to work with us to get everything moving promptly. Lisa responded very swiftly to our questions and ensured we had all the required permissions etc. to make the necessary changes and amendments.
What They Said
Lisa Ball of Together Co said:
“Build14me were a real breath of fresh air, they identified issues, worked out the most effective way of ‘fixing’ them and then worked with us through the process. They took the time to understand our organisation so all their recommendations hit the spot and we now have a site that is performing really well on all levels.”
Jo (W) of Build14me said:
”Changing an established brand is a challenge for anyone, but for an organisation like Together Co whose role it is to provide essential services to local people, it is vital that the new name quickly establishes itself and that the website is found by its audiences, partners and funders. We approached the SEO issues methodically, taking into account the detailed changes that make a real difference. We are really pleased the site is now being found for the right reasons by the right people. Together Co were great to work with, happy to put in the hours under the guidance of our experts and to take on board our comments, recommendations and suggestions around site content to really move things forward.”
